After starting his engineering career with truck mounted forklift manufacturer Moffett Engineering, Martin McVicar established Combilift in 1998 with Technical Director Robert Moffett. The company’s initial flagship product, the Combilift multi-directional forklift, revolutionised the handling and storage of long loads and quickly became a best seller on a global scale. Under Martin’s leadership Combilift has developed a wide portfolio of products to handle not just long products but also to ensure the safe movement and space saving storage of containers, oversized loads and palletised goods. Combilift is now the acknowledged leading manufacturer and innovator in its sector worldwide and has sold over 50,000 units which are exported to more than 85 countries.
Martin was just 29 when he was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and the company has since won many prestigious industry awards for its ever growing range of products and its operations. These include six awards from The UK Forklift truck Association, the Red Dot design award and numerous Deloitte Best Managed Companies awards. In recognition of its success in export markets Combilift has also been honoured numerous times by the Irish Exporters Association and has won the Overall Irish Exporter to Germany Award.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, Combilift’s new global headquarters and manufacturing facility was officially opened by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Built at a cost of €50 million, the 46,500 sq. m. factory is the largest manufacturing operation under one single roof in the Republic of Ireland. With room for expansion on the 100-acre site, Martin’s aim is to double current production within the next 5 years and he sees no reason why Combilift cannot become a €billion company at some time in the future.
