Global Manufacturing: How the geopolitical and economic landscape is evolving
9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
The impact of the global pandemic, climate change and geopolitics are driving companies to concentrate more than ever on a double transformation: smarter digitised manufacturing and a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, leading to sustainable manufacturing practices. Indeed, a growing number of companies are treating “sustainability” as an important objective in their strategy and operations to increase growth and global competitiveness.
Companies across the world face increased costs in materials, energy, and compliance coupled with higher expectations of customers, investors, and local communities. On top of these, challenges, now the recent Russia-Ukraine war has put supply chains, energy, and certain resources under new pressures and constraints. Our industry is being confronted with skills shortages and growing demands for the acquisition of technologies such as artificial intelligence and 5G networks, the entire manufacturing ecosystem must be managed and lead with a clear vision of where Europe and Ireland’s manufacturing wish to go, and how to take organisations there.
Session Outcomes:
• How the current geopolitical landscape is impacting manufacturing globally;
• Understanding of the Irish RDI Landscape and how Manufacturing grows through Innovation (R&D)
• National Manufacturing Strategy and Irish Innovation Ecosystem – where do we fit in?
• How the shaping of EU Industrial policies are key to future-proofing manufacturing;
• Leveraging supports for manufacturing (Next Generation Digital & Sustainability EU funding)
• Building and sustaining Irish and European manufacturing v’s global manufacturing;
• Addressing labour shortage challenges, up-skilling talent, and designing a new ecosystem for talent to thrive and survive in a data-driven manufacturing environment;

MÓR™ Enterprise Excellence: moving your business forward in a holistic manner
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
The members of the Advanced Manufacturing Working Group have worked over the past year to redevise the MÓRTM Benchmark model to advance leadership thinking and organisations capability in the ongoing pursuit of Enterprise Excellence. Funded by Irish Medtech Skillnet, this approach steers all organisations regardless of maturity and supplements existing in-house frameworks. This is a paradigm shift in mindset for many organisations in terms of their purpose -approach, value-based decision making, shared vision and aligned strategy – for customers, employees, environment and society as a whole, all underpinned by a new cloud-based MÓRTM framework.
• Advance thinking and understanding of leaders
• Adopt a science-based systems approach to improvement
• Facilitate joined up thinking and collaboration
• A model that is situationally adaptable and easy to follow

Talent to thrive: Why a strong talent pipeline and a world-class education system is the cornerstone of economic and social progress
Over the last four decades Ireland has transitioned to a knowledge-intensive economy where a strong talent pipeline and a world-class education system is the corner store of economic and social progress. Ireland has developed this model of substance and is now challenged in retaining its place internationally as a nation with exceptional value, prosperity and investment – particularly in the context of a changing international tax regime as well as megatrends around climate change, demographic changes, digitalisation and globalisation to name a few. Ireland is very well positioned to use this new paradigm as an opportunity for Ireland’s economy to evolve and focus on sustainable economic growth. Both the recently launched Irish Medtech Association and Engineering Industries Ireland strategies have identified talent and innovation at its core. Undoubtedly – our education system is going to continue to play an important role if not more important role in the delivery of this evolved economic model. The increasing demand for and use of advanced analytics, AI and other data oriented skills is resulting in significant shifts in the talent demanded. All organisations will need to consider their talent strategy to ensure they have a future pipeline of the skills they will require to operate effectively. There are clear areas where we can make tactical improvements, particularly around preparing for the future of work, harnessing talent, participation in lifelong learning and diversity to name but a few.
Session outcomes:
- Positive policies and conditions to support a thriving talent base, and talent as a driver for investment.
- Aligning talent strategy to your purpose and why prioritising talent development drives value and growth
- How to engage with a wider talent ecosystem of partners to reach diverse and skilled talent pools
- The skills and competencies for the future of manufacturing
- Managerial perspectives on balancing goals for retention, culture, and innovation
- Exploring ways to add flexibility across your organization in order to attract and retain workers
